“There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists, well without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.”
I was watching a rerun of Modern Family with my Grandfather when this quote jumped out at me. Throughout the episode, the family members keep disagreeing about ways to respond to one another’s dreams and creativities. Gloria doesn’t want Jay to criticize their son’s art work (even if it isn’t his best work). Phil feels like Claire, his wife, quashes all of his entrepreneurial ideas. And Mitch doesn’t believe Cam made a pumpkin fly across a football field with a slingshot.
The individual disputes all come to a head when Claire and Jay decide to side with Mitch and pressure Cam to “prove it.” After Cam is unsuccessful in his attempts to get the pumpkin to “fly,” the three realists surprisingly decide to jump in and help. And by doing so end up making the thing that was once impossible possible.
The episode ends with the above quote in a voiceover as the pumpkin flies through the field goal.
Whether you are a realist or a dreamer, you are necessary. Without dreamers, there would be
no innovation. And without realists, things like airplanes and Disney World would simply be ideas. Realists bring about action. Each needs the other. That’s the magic of it all.
Whether you are a dreamer or a realist, there is someone who needs you, someone who can benefit from your encouragement, from your creative brain, from your outside perspective, from your accountability, or call to action. And there are people who can benefit you.
So my two part challenge for you is this:
- Don’t just let this be a nice, hypothetical thought. Take action. Whether you are a dreamer or a realist, who is one person you can help today? Send them a text, pick up the phone and call them, email them… I don’t really care how you reach out so much as I care that you let them know you are on their side and here to help them take flight.
- Who is someone you can ask for help? Reach out to them today and let them know you see value in who they are and how their brain works. Then invite them into your creative process.
